2 Feb. 2014. Long train ride from Tokyo to Hakodate, including a Hayabusa Shinkansen leg to Shin-Aomori then an express train via the undersea tunnel to Hakodate. Enjoyed the traditional ekiben, or boxed lunches.
Since the next day was Setsubun, we had the opportunity to buy and eat uncut makizushi called ehō-maki (恵方巻, lit. “lucky direction roll”). The rolled sushi is to be eaten in its entirety while pointing it towards a given direction (see compass illustration on package). I was told that this sushi eating practice was started by retailers that needed to improve their profits.
